Professionals would have you believe that it is impossible to repair your credit without their services. The reality is that do it yourself credit restoration is possible. Here are somethings you can do to improve your credit score.
The first step is getting a copy of your credit report. There are many places online that you can do this or you can go to
annualcreditreport.com to get your report free once a year.
After you have your report you need to take the time to review it thoroughly. Make a list of each item on your report that needs attention. Some information that is incorrect will be obvious, like an account that is not yours. But, you also want to look at things like your credit limits and the dates that an account was last active. Make a separate list of accurate derogatory information that needs addressing.
Next, you need to draft a credit dispute letter. You can get free samples on the internet. Try to make the letter your own so it will not sound as if you are attempting credit repair, which can cause the credit bureaus to disregard your dispute as frivolous. Once you have the letter completed, you want to pick two or three items to do your first round of disputes on.
But where should you start? You want to begin with things that are impacting your score the most. You want to think about the items that you have the greatest chance of getting corrected. Accounts that are between two and five years old with a negative status are a good place to start. Newer accounts will be difficult to get removed and older accounts are not impacting you as much.
You want to send your dispute letters via mail, return receipt requested. Make sure you do not forget to dispute with all three of the credit bureaus separately. Then you will need to wait to get your responses. Once you have responses, you need to evaluate your results. Hopefully you got a few items removed. Then, you need to wait a few weeks and begin the process again.
If you were not successful at getting an item removed, do not give up. You can always try disputing again in hopes that the creditor will miss the deadline and you will get the item deleted from your report. Or, you can move on to more advanced strategies like the 6-2-3 method and debt validation.
With persistence, organization and time, you can repair your credit!
